A long time in Cuba could use the mobile phone service of the single local operator ETECSA only the government officials and the tourists.
However, on 14th April 2008, the new government has removed this restriction and allowed all the citizens to use the mobile phone services.
During the first 10 days of freedom, ETECSA subscribed only 7400 persons. But this is not a small number, like it can be considered at the first sight, because the subscription fee is 120 USD. This means that an usual Cuban must work half a year to earn 120 USD, meantime he has to forget about food and so on.
Accordingly to ETECSA data, nowadays a total of 300 thousands people are registered as mobile phones users.
