The Finnish vendor consistently has been able to successfully produce and promote on the mass market its low-cost solutions. That’s why, Nokia’s aim and ambition grow with each passing year. Although the company previously did not have to complain about the lack of consumer demand, this time we believe the situation will be just the same.
The secret of success is simple: even with an unarmed statistics eye we can see that has existed and still exists an audience, which is not interested in developments in the field of mobile pictures or high-speed data transmission. Long lasting battery and simplicity - these are the determining factors for such consumers. The exact and intelligent implementation of the priority basic capabilities in mobile phones is the required minimum of Nokia.
Exterior
Nokia 1650 seems a miniature, although the sizes of the phone are quite ordinary. It’s a pleasure to hold it in hands, and in life, he looks much more attractive than the photo, At least in this color and with any set theme, done in warm tones.
The body materials correspond to the price category of this model, but they are not so bad, as happens in the budget segment. The surface of the device is not smooth, but matte, that’s why is pleasant at touch. The device is not slipping away from the hands also because of his weight evenly distributed. The phone in overall is not poor, but the battery cover is not very stable and spoils the overall picture, fact proven also by the specific sounds.
Only one element is glossy - the facial plastic cover. It has a decorative mirror effect screen surface, which brings some diversity to the overall design concept.
The lateral sides geography is standard: on the right side is located the speaker’s hole, at the lower end - the charger’s slot and the 2.5 - millimeter jack slot for headset. On the upper end, a flashlight is integrated. It is activated by double-clicking on "Up", just the same is turned off. The same function can be found separately in the menu. Is also possible to assign the flashlight control for the right soft key or add it to the list of quick access.
Unfortunately, space for a separated volume key on the sidewalls was not found. This is a minus, and here is why: every phone optimized for convenient communication, should have the dedicated volume key and should not force the user to control the volume with the navigation button. However, over time you can get used to this.
The keyboard is practical on use. All the digit keys are made from a single polymer sheet, similar to rubber. This eliminates the ingress of sand and other dirt under the keys, and between them and prevents the ingress of moisture. That’s why a shed liquid (of course, if is not a highly concentrated acid - all can happen!) is not leaked under the keys and did not get to the ferromagnetic layer on the motherboard or other details.
The key block’s relief resembles the steps. Such a separation is good for ergonomics. A desire of bigger sizes is left only by the numeric keys – they are quite small, some hands will find them difficult. Well, some people will have to get used to this too.
Otherwise everything is fine. The navigation quatre key block is presented without the fifth ("OK") click. Many will find it initially unusual. The soft-keys and the call keys are enough big and emphasized with a relief hump.
Nokia’s denial of the quite outdated displays in favor of a little outdated is observed immediately. Linked with this fact, the existence of the “Multi-phonebook” option is an evidence of the manufacturer’s consideration to accommodate the interests of developed and developing countries, where not everyone can afford a personal mobile phone. As the studies have showed, one handset, in general, often is used by the whole family.
The FM-receiver work and the interface remained unchanged compared with the previous “catching the wave” models from the budget segment: auto-search, memory for 20 stations, radio-alarm and lack of the opportunity to choose between "mono" and "stereo". All Nokia’s headsets are compatible, the only condition - 2.5 mm plug.
There are three built-in games: Snake Xenzia, Sudoku, Beach Rally. The embedded applications can be divided into useful and entertaining. The first category is represented by the calculator, a calendar (with memo), unit converter, alarm clock and a rather curious "Count", allowing counting the spent cash per day or per week. The entertaining application “music synthesizer” will allow those for whom the word "sol-fa" is not an empty sound, to "remember everything".
The stated work time for the Nokia 1650’s battery - "8 hours talk-time and 420 hours in standby mode". Proof of this is the BL-5CA battery capacity of 1020 mAh. In low-intensity call usage during testing, after 2 days, the segment battery indicator did not lose even one single division. The result is impressive.
Conclusions
Nokia 1650 gives the impression of a well thought out and quality product. The model has the necessary minimum, which only please the way it was realized.
The phone is nice, practical and durable. Good assembly and materials, one sheet keyboard, excluding the ingress of dirt (but subjectively small number keys), and confidence in a clear voice conversation – these are the main advantages of this phone. The only disappointing fact is the lack of the additional double volume key.
Furthermore only pluses: good for a "budget segment" screen, radio and long lasting battery. Overall, the phone is a worthy replacement for the popular Nokia 2626 and Nokia 1600.
