Samsung announces feature-packed and expensive SPH-W6050 for Korea
2008-11-14 00:00:00

Officially announced today, the Samsung Anycall SPH-W6050 is the latest 5-megapixel cameraphone to appear under Korea’s handset spotlight. While it may look rather bland, looks are deceiving, as aside from a 5MP auto-focus cam, it also features a built-in DMB TV tuner. And if that’s not enough, a 3-inch WVGA LCD touchscreen display is also on-board, as well as Samsung’s Haptic user interface and Internet browser. Some users may also like the simplicity of its design, which is key to making it look good on hand and on a table. This new handset supports HSUPA and 3G connectivity, which could make that front-facing camera very useful. Of course, there’s the usual array of mobile phone features available with the Samsung SPH-W6050 and expandable memory via microSD cards. No word yet on a release outside of Korea, but in that part of Asia it will retail from 800,000 Korean Won or nearly $600 at the very least.

Samsung Overtakes Motorola In the U.S.
2008-11-07 00:00:00

Samsung Electronics Co. overtook Motorola Inc. as the leading vendor of handsets in the U.S. for the first time in the third quarter, according to data from Strategy Analytics Inc. The South Korean company reached the milestone -- with 22.4% of the market compared with Motorola's 21.1% -- by offering carriers a full portfolio of devices, from high-end products such as the touch-screen Instinct to lower-end phones given free to customers who sign up with a particular carrier.

Samsung T*Omnia due in US by end of November?
2008-11-05 00:00:00

Samsung has only just introduced the T*Omnia in its home country but may already be enroute to the US within a matter of weeks, a claim from BusinessWeek. The company is reportedly in talks to bring the Windows Mobile touchscreen phone with an unspecified US carrier by the end of November, though whether it represents the fully-upgraded T*Omnia or its lower-resolution, lower-capacity ancestor is unknown. Recent leaks have suggested that versions of the Omnia may ultimately be available for two carriers, with both CDMA and GSM/WCDMA versions passing through the FCC. The GSM version has been listed as the i907, or an upgraded version of the original i900, and so points to the possibility of the T*Omnia being a candidate for AT&T. Samsung's newest model should support 3G on the American provider's network up to 7.2Mbps downstream. The CDMA version, however, is effectively unique to the US and combined with the apparent magazine leak would support claims of a Verizon Omnia due this month. The T*Omnia supports either 4GB or 16GB of storage and supplies a five-megapixel camera, GPS and Wi-Fi, making it a flagship device for any carrier that would pick it

Samsung T*OMNIA, an Improved WM6.1 OMNIA for the Korean Market
2008-11-03 00:00:00

Samsung Korea announced this Morning the T*OMNIA, the OMNIA’s big brother. If basically both the OMNIA and T*OMNIA are similar, the Korean version has however 4 improved features, with : - A slightly larger Screen 3.3” (Regular OMNIA has only a 3.22”)- A Higher Screen Resolution of 480 x 800 (Regular OMNIA has only a 240 x 400 screen resolution)- A DMB TV Tuner (Digital TV Tuner) Except the above mentioned differences and a larger size (115.2 x 58.1 x 13.65 mm), the T*OMNIA received the same features than its little bother. It is interesting to underline here that this T*OMNIA is using the same hardware (Digital TV tuner, Screen Size and Resolution) has the Japanese OMNIA, the 930SC, that we had the chance to play with a couple of days ago, with the exception of having on the Korean Version a Windows Mobile 6.1 OS.

Samsung says: 8MP phones with 3x optical zoom next year, 12MP later
2008-10-27 00:00:00

A phone with an 8 Megapixel camera is nice, that’s for sure. But Samsung knows that a phone with an 8 Megapixel camera and 3x optical zoom would be even nicer. According to Telecoms Korea, Samsung Techwin and Samsung Electro-Mechanics, two of the South Korean giant’s subsidiaries, have already developed 8 Megapixel camera modules with 3x optical zoom. The module has an autofocus performance improved by 57%, a 1/2.5 inch CMOS sensor and lens that support F2.85. The module is also a bit bigger than the 5MP one previously developed by Samsung.   A Samsung Electro-Mechanics official unveiled that the first handset to come with 8MP and 3x digital zoom will be released in early 2009. Even more, the South Korean manufacturer is also working on a 12MP camera module that will be smaller than the 8MP one. There’s no word yet on when this will be integrated into a phone, though.

Samsung i900 WiTu (Omnia) mobile phone review
2008-10-23 00:00:00

At a quick survey of the Samsung i900 communicator, involuntarily arise a desire to compare it with iPhone. But, is it really correct to compare these two devices? Is it really Omnia a direct competitor of Apple iPhone? More likely another case takes place here: iPhone’s main guiding line is the idea of convenient touch management which also was “barrowed” by other “enterprising manufacturers”. Among "enterprising manufacturers" there was also Samsung. Within last year it has had time to create some "iPhone killers" - F490, F700. In comparison with "the ideological inspirer" the announced models had some changes (for example, the QWERTY-keyboard in F700). For quite some time, they began to differ in price too, which is almost twice less than iPhone price. At the same time, the Apple phone is a smartphone (Mac OS X) and, with the advent of a high-grade OS, the "usual" devices from Samsung cannot keep up with it. Therefore, the South-Korean company has not stopped on the reached level and has presented the i900 model. The index "i" speaks about the presence in the device of an operational system. Samsung has enough experience with the smartphones, both, on Symbian and on Windows Mobile. The novelty has the last scheme, Windows

Samsung shows no mercy, redoes Soul in black and gold Limited Edition
2008-10-17 00:00:00

One of the great things about the original Soul is that despite its heavy-hitting credentials -- 5-megapixel camera, 7.2Mbps HSDPA, and OLED-equipped d-pad, just to name a few -- it remains a pretty understated (read: tasteful) slider. Of course, taste isn't for everyone, which is apparently why Samsung has elected to dress up its high-end U900 in black and gold for a "Limited Edition" that commands about a 700 Czech crown ($40) premium over its easier-to-look-at silver counterpart. To each their own, we suppose. The Limited Edition is already available in some markets, and with the high sheen of that classy gold plating, it should be pretty easy to pick out.
